Dr. W. Steves Ring was a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, and was considered one of the top transplant surgeons in the country. After Dr. Ring's arrival in 1988, he established the heart and lung transplant program at UT Southwestern. By 2008, the program had reached the milestone of 700 heart and 375 lung transplants. Under his leadership, it has become one of the leading heart and lung transplant centers in the world. Members of the department are also among the nation's top experts in mechanical circulatory support.
