In the late 1970s, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded a research unit for the study of human diabetes in Phoenix, Arizona, of which Dr. Roger Unger was appointed the principal investigator. The study focused on the Pima Indigenous population in Arizona. A July 1979 'Texas Times' article reported that 50 percent of Pima peoples aged 35 years or older were diabetic and almost all adult Pimas were obese. Research efforts were focused on the Pima Indigenous population because they are a genetically homogeneous population.
