Dr. Harry M. Spence (1906-1994) was the first Chairman of Urology at UT Southwestern. He joined the faculty in 1946 as clinical professor; by 1952, under Spence's leadership, the urology program was officially recognized by the American College of Surgeons. He served as chairman until 1971, when he handed leadership of the department to Paul C. Peters, and retired in 1985, becoming chairman emeritus. Dr. Spence was dedicated to education and the development of the urology residency program at Southwestern Medical School.
