At the time of this photo in 1984, Dr. Sprague was President of the university. He began his career on campus as Dean of Southwestern Medical School (1967 to 1972), which was then the top position on campus. By 1972, a Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and a School of Allied Health Sciences had been added to the campus. In November 1972, the campus was reorganized and renamed University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas, and Dr. Sprague was appointed President. In 1979, he was elected to the prestigious Institute of Medicine. Dr. Sprague retired as President in 1986.
