Zale Lipshy Hospital opened in November 1989, as a private clinical teaching hospital for the UT Southwestern School of Medicine. The building was decorated throughout with about 300 colorful Asian textiles, approximately 200 of which come from Indonesia. The acquisition, preparation and hanging of the textiles were made possible by a gift from the Eugene McDermott Foundation. In 2001, operations of Zale Lipshy and St. Paul Hospitals were merged under the umbrella of University Medical Center, Inc. On January 1, 2005, UT Southwestern took over operation of Zale Lipshy and St. Paul. From that point on, the entity was known as University Hospital, with the St. Paul and Zale Lipshy names used only to designate physical locations.
