Title
Dr. Drew Gaffney's return celebration after space flight
In June of 1991, UT Southwestern cardiologist and Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine Dr. Drew Gaffney flew on Space Lab Life Sciences 1, the first National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) flight dedicated to human medical research. Its crew completed over 18 experiments in nine days, bringing back more medical data than any previous NASA flight. Upon Dr. Gaffney's return to UT Southwestern, he and the UT Southwestern space research team were honored with a celebration on July 3. Festivities began in Gooch Auditorium, where UT System Chancellor Hans Mark and UT Southwestern President Kern Wildenthal presented the group with certificates of appreciation. A film--narrated by Gaffney--highlighting the mission followed. The celebration then moved to Eugene McDermott Plaza, where a shuttle-shaped cake was cut and served.
