Michael S. Brown, M.D. and Joseph L. Goldstein's, M.D findings led to the development of statin drugs, the cholesterol-lowering compounds that today are among the most widely-prescribed medications in the United States. Drs. Brown and Goldstein also share the Lasker Award in Basic Medical Research (1985) and the National Medal of Science (1988) for their joint work. Dr. Brown has been a member of the UT Southwestern faculty since 1971, and Dr. Goldstein since 1972. Both have been honored in the United States by election to the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine.
