Dr. Joseph F. Sambrook (1939-2019) came to UT Southwestern in 1985 as a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry. In 1991, he stepped down as department chairman to become Director of the McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development, a position he held until 1995, when he emigrated to Australia. Dr. Sambrook was renowned for his research in molecular virology, especially his work with tumor viruses. In addition, he was the co-author of 'Molecular Cloning: A Laboratory Manual', the definitive and best-selling manual on gene cloning. A native of Great Britain, Dr. Sambrook was a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, the British honor which is equivalent to membership in the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
