For over five decades, Professor of Physiology Dr. John Vanatta was a constant presence at Southwestern Medical School. Known for his devotion to teaching, he instructed every medical school class from his arrival in 1947 until his semi-retirement in 1997, and then continued to tutor students. He earned numerous awards, including UT Southwestern Outstanding Teacher in 1986. In 2007, he was named an Ashbel Smith Professor, one of the highest honors bestowed by the UT System Board of Regents.
