Dr. Burton Combes was Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine, Digestive and Liver Diseases Unit, at the time of his death. Dr. Combes joined the Southwestern Medical School faculty in 1957. He established and directed the Liver Diseases Unit for more than 40 years. Considered one of the founding fathers of modern hepatology, Dr. Combes made enormous contributions to research in autoimmune liver disease, including autoimmune hepatitis and primary biliary cirrhosis. In 2002, he was named an Ashbel Smith Professor, one of the highest honors bestowed by the UT System Board of Regents.
