An aerobic exercise test in progress, with the research subject on a giant, custom-made treadmill in the Human Performance Laboratory. Dr. Peter Snell is seen at the center of the photo, in the background.
In 1985, UT Southwestern and St. Paul Medical Center established a Human Performance Center as a joint venture, under the direction of three UT Southwestern faculty members: Professor Jere Mitchell, M.D., an authority on exercise physiology and director of the university's Moss Heart Center; Peter Snell, Ph.D., three-time Olympic gold medalist; and James Stray-Gundersen, M.D., sports medicine coordinator for the U.S. Nordic ski team. In addition to conducting research, the Center provided comprehensive evaluations for athletes.
