On November 23, 1998, eminent physicist Dr. Stephen Hawking (foreground) delivered a speech at UT Southwestern on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the disease that has left him incapable of speech and most independent movement. Dr. Hawking was joined by a panel of experts who spoke about recent developments in the prevention and treatment of ALS. The panelists were (from left) Dr. Richard Barohn, Dr. Karen Kowalske, and Dr. Scott Brady.
