Dr. John W. Burnside (1941-2015) came to UT Southwestern in 1987 as a professor of internal medicine and family practice and community medicine and served as associate dean for clinical affairs, which was a newly-created position that involved managing the clinical activities at the Health Science Center's many affiliates, both current and planned. He later became associate dean for professional education. In 1994, the Irene Wadel and Robert Atha, Jr. Professorship of Internal Medicine, was established in Honor of John W. Burnside, M.D. Before coming to UT Southwestern, Dr. Burnside had been a professor of medicine and associate vice president for health affairs and vice dean at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center of the University of Pennsylvania. From 1979-1980, he was a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow.
