Dr. Gladys Fashena was the first faculty member in Pediatrics at Southwestern Medical College when it opened in 1943. She was a pioneer in pediatric cardiology, and became a full professor in 1949, teaching until her retirement in 1980. Among her accomplishments was the creation of the pediatric cardiology department at Children's Medical Center of Dallas. In 2007, Southwestern Medical School honored Dr. Fashena by naming one of its six newly-created colleges in her honor.
