Dr. John Schermerhorn was the first full-time Dean of UT Southwestern's School of Health Professions. He came to the three-year-old school as Dean in 1971 and continued as Dean until his retirement in 1985. After retirement he served as Dean Emeritus. He is remembered for guiding the school through its early years and increasing the number of programs offered. The School's Schermerhorn Scholarship Award, which recognizes outstanding academic and extracurricular student performance, is named in his honor. The Schermerhorn Endowment Fund was initiated by faculty and administration in 1985 when he retired.
