Stormie Jones made medical history when she became the world's first recipient of a simultaneous heart and liver transplant in 1984. Stormie was referred as a patient to UT Southwestern by her home-town physician in the summer of 1983. She was diagnosed with 'familial hypercholesterolemia' a one-in-a-million disease that leads to extremely high cholesterol levels in the blood, which results in clogged coronary arteries that can lead to heart attacks and stroke. After Stormie had a heart attack in October 1983 and another later that year, a simultaneous heart and liver transplant was seen as her best chance for survival. Unfortunately, Stormie lived only six years with her new heart and liver.
