Dr. Robert McClelland was Professor Emeritus of Surgery, having retired on August 31, 2007. Nationally regarded for his expertise in surgical education, he was known particularly for creating and editing 'Selected Reading in General Surgery', a compilation of scientific papers for surgical residents that he began in 1974. He joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 1962. On November 22, 1963, Dr. McClelland was among the physicians in Parkland Memorial Hospital who attempted to save the life of President John F. Kennedy after he had been shot. In 1999, Dr. McClelland was named an Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus by the UT Medical Branch in Galveston, where he had received his M.D. degree in 1954.
