Dr. Ronald (Skip) F. Garvey began his career in Dallas with an internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital in 1953. After service in the military, he returned to Parkland for his residency in 1956.
Dr. Garvey joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 1960 and held a succession of academic and administrative appointments, including Professor of Surgery, until 1993. From 1987 to 1991, he was the Chief Operating Officer (CEO) of Zale Lipshy University Hospital.
Dr. Garvey was the chief author of the 1993 book, 'Surgery: The First Fifty Years: A history of the department of Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and Parkland Memorial Hospital'.
From 1997 to 2002, Dr. Garvey served as the interim director, then as president, of the University of Texas Health Center at Tyler.
