Dr. Marvin D. Siperstein was a Professor of Internal Medicine and renowned researcher in diabetes and cholesterol metabolism who trained and inspired several generations of medical researchers, including the 1985 Nobel Laureates Michael Brown and Joseph Goldstein.
Dr. Brown said of him, 'It is impossible to overestimate the impact that Dr. Siperstein had on the meteoric development of our medical school in the 1960s. He was an inspirational mentor who drew more than a dozen future professors into his orbit while they were still in training.'
Dr. Siperstein's research on the metabolism of cholesterol in the body served as the foundation for later work by Drs. Brown and Goldstein. He also made significant contributions to the diagnosis of diabetes and to the understanding of the basis of its complications. Dr. Siperstein came to Southwestern Medical School in 1955 and left in 1973 to move to the University of California San Francisco Medical School.
