In 1984, Dr. Drew Gaffney, cardiologist and Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern, learned from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) that he was one of four scientists who had been chosen to fly as payload specialists on upcoming space flights. He finally flew with NASA in June of 1991, on Space Lab Life Sciences 1, the first NASA flight dedicated to human medical research. UT Southwestern's research project was one of 18 on the flight, and investigated the effects of weightlessness on the circulatory system. UT Southwestern's project was designed by a group of researchers under Principal Investigator Gunnar Blomqvist, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Internal Medicine.
