Dr. Vernie A. Stembridge joined the Southwestern Medical School Pathology Department in 1959, and was chairman of the department from 1967 to 1988.
From 1988 to 1991, he was acting Dean of the School of Health Professions.
In 1991, the UT Board of Regents named him an Ashbel Smith Professor.
He retired in 1992, and served as Chairman Emeritus of Pathology until 1998.
Dr. Stembridge played a key role in the development of the Pathology Department and in the establishment of a permanent medical examiner's office for Dallas County. He also served in several leadership positions at Parkland Memorial Hospital. The Pathology Department's Vernie A. Stembridge Award is named in his memory. The award is given to a fourth-year medical student who will be going into a pathology residency and who has a strong academic record.
