Dr. Daniel W. Foster (1930-2018) was Professor of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern and held the John Denis McGarry, Ph.D. Distinguished Chair in Diabetes and Metabolic Research. He served as Chairman of the Internal Medicine Department from 1988 to 2003. His research focused on the intermediary metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids. Dr. Foster was for many years the co-editor of the widely-used 'Williams Textbook of Endocrinology'. A 1955 graduate of Southwestern Medical School, he joined the faculty in 1962. In the 1970s, he hosted a nationally televised program on KERA-TV, the Dallas station of the Public Broadcasting Service, which aired weekly and presented medical information for a non-medical audience. He was elected to the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1989. In 2011, Dr. Foster received the TIAA-CREF Distinguished Medical Educator Award for his pre-eminent career of teaching and research at UT Southwestern.
