Gilman was Regental Professor Emeritus of Pharmacology at UT Southwestern. He shared the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Martin Rodbell for their discovery of "G proteins." This discovery led to a more complete understanding of how cells receive signals and respond to external stimuli. Dr. Gilman served as dean of Southwestern Medical School from 2005 to 2009, and in 2005 he became Executive Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Provost of UT Southwestern. He is well known for his editorship of the best-selling medical textbook "The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics," often called "Goodman and Gilman" after the names of its editors. (The first edition was written by Drs. Louis Goodman and Alfred Gilman, father of Alfred G. Gilman.) There are many records that document Dr. Gilman's editorial duties in the Alfred Goodman Gilman Collection, which is held by the UT Southwestern Archives and is open for research. 000000775 533__ $$d2017 000000775 540__ $$aThis image is provided for non-commercial, personal, or research use.
