Dr. Carleton B. Chapman became the Chief of Cardiology in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern in 1953. Dr. Chapman created the first Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Parkland Memorial Hospital and he also founded the Pauline and Adolph Weinberger Laboratory for Cardiopulmonary Research at UT Southwestern. He also planned the Dallas Bed Rest and Training Study, a pivotal and oft-cited study in exercise science. He left UT Southwestern in 1966 to become Dean of Dartmouth Medical School, a position he held until 1973. Dr. Chapman had a lifelong interest in medical history and ethics. This interest led to the publication of several books, including "Physicians, Law, and Ethics" and a biography of John Shaw Billings entitled "Order Out of Chaos: John Shaw Billings and America's Coming of Age."
