Dr. Philip O'Bryan Montgomery arrived at Southwestern Medical School in 1952 to practice and teach pathology. Over the next 50 years, he would play a pivotal role in the development of UT Southwestern, including building bridges between the medical center and the broader Dallas community. Early in his career Dr. Montgomery attracted the attention of the research community by being among the first to characterize fibrinoid, the change in the blood vessel walls of people with high blood pressure. In 1962 he and a team of scientists submitted a proposal for an experiment for NASA to include on a Skylab project. The proposal -- to test the effects of weightlessness on human cells -- was accepted. In 1968, he was named Associate Dean of Southwestern Medical School and put in charge of a $40 million project to double the size of the medical school campus and the number of students. In the early 1980s, Dallas Mayor Jack Evans appointed Dr. Montgomery to coordinate planning for the Dallas Arts District. In 1991, Dr. Montgomery was appointed by the UT System Board of Regents as an Ashbel Smith Professor, one of the highest honors given to a faculty member in the UT System.
