Description
Dr. Donald W. Seldin joined the Southwestern Medical School faculty in 1951, and the following year became Chairman of Internal Medicine. At that time, the medical school was housed in flimsy prefabricated wooden buildings, often called the "shacks." This photo shows Dr. Seldin with one of the "shacks" in the background. After becoming the Chairman of Internal Medicine, Dr. Seldin recruited distinguished physicians and researcher to the campus and guided the development of the brightest of his own students into brilliant Southwestern faculty. Thus, he played a paramount role in the development of Southwestern Medical School. In 2007, the medical school honored him by naming one of its six newly-created colleges in his honor.
The inscription in the lower-right corner of the photo reads "Took this in 1957 when I came to look at the job. Obviously I was charmed by the facilities and by the charisma. So were we all--Morris Ziff 2/19/76". Dr. Morris Ziff, an expert on rheumatic diseases, joined the Southwestern Medical School faculty in 1958.
