Dr. Alice Lorraine Smith was one of Southwestern Medical School's first female graduates (class of 1946) and was among the first women to serve on the faculty. She joined the faculty in 1950 as Assistant Professor of Pathology and spent 56 years at UT Southwestern, becoming an Associate Professor in 1956 and Professor in 1976. Dr. Smith was a leader in the field of cytopathology—the study of disease at the cellular level. She also co-authored several commonly-used textbooks, including "Microbiology and Pathology" and "Principles of Microbiology" from the early 1950s through the 1980s.
