Description

Dr. Carl A. Moyer was dean of Southwestern Medical School from September, 1950 to October, 1951. He joined the Southwestern Medical College faculty in 1946 as Chairman of Experimental Surgery, and later played a key role in the 1949 transfer of Southwestern Medical College into the University of Texas System. He was renowned as the author of the book "Moyer's Fluid Balance," as well as for his development of a method of treating burns using silver nitrate. Dr. Moyer's contributions are described further in a chapter of the book "Surgery: The First Fifty Years, 1943 to 1993..." Through his mentorship of Dr. Ben J. Wilson, Dr. Moyer served as inspiration many years later for Dr. Wilson's statue, "The Mentor," placed in Zale Lipshy University Hospital in 1992. This photograph was digitized from the 1946-47 medical school yearbook, "Caduceus."
