Dr. Linda B. Buck received the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with Dr. Richard Axel for their research on the olfactory system. This photo shows Dr. Buck receiving applause from the other Nobel winners, as she holds the Nobel Prize certificate. Dr. Buck received her Ph.D. from UT Southwestern in 1980, and is the first alumnus of the Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences to receive the Nobel Prize. As a graduate student in microbiology at UT Southwestern, Dr. Buck worked under and was mentored by Dr. Ellen Vitetta, who is Professor in the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology.
