Description

The students in this discussion group are identified on the back of the photo as (left to right): Jules Hirsch, G. Thomas Shires (later a faculty member at Southwestern Medical School--see below), Charles Lodowski, unidentified, Sam Phillips, Nathan Kleban, William Huckabee, Bernard Chaikin, and Mary Booth. G. Thomas Shires graduated from Southwestern Medical College in 1948 and joined the Southwestern Medical School faculty in 1957, becoming chair of surgery in 1961. After President John F. Kennedy was shot on November 22, 1963, Kennedy was brought to Parkland Memorial Hospital where Shires--who was Chief of Surgery--tried to save Kennedy's life. The same day, Shires operated successfully on Texas Governor John Connally, who was wounded in the attack on Kennedy's car. (Note: Although digitized from an original photograph in the UT Southwestern Archives, this image also appears in the Southwestern Medical College 1948 yearbook, "Caduceus.")
