Southwestern Medical College opened on July 1, 1943. The first graduation ceremony was held just eight months later in March, 1944. Many students in the first graduating class had previously been students at Baylor University College of Medicine, which suddenly moved to Houston in April of 1943. The first graduation ceremony was held in the auditorium of Alex W. Spence Junior High School.
