Dr. David J. Mangelsdorf (1958-2025) was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology and held the Alfred G. Gilman Distinguished Chair in Pharmacology and the Raymond and Ellen Willie Distinguished Chair in Molecular Neuropharmacology in Honor of Harold B. Crasilneck, Ph.D., as well as a secondary appointment in the Department of Biochemistry. An Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, he pioneered the characterization of orphan nuclear receptors and uncovered key cellular signaling pathways – discoveries that were instrumental in advancing our understanding of diabetes, obesity, cancer, alcohol intoxication, and parasitic infections. Dr. Mangelsdorf joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 1993, and he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2008 and the National Academy of Medicine in 2024.
