Description

Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children opened in Dallas in 1921 in this building near the corner of Oak Lawn and Maple Avenues. A founder and the chief of surgery was Dr. William Beal Carrell, the first orthopedic surgeon in Dallas, who had specialized in orthopedic surgery while in a World War I field hospital in France. (Specialization was rare in surgery before this era.) Scottish Rite Hospital now occupies a newer building near the site of the original building. This photo dates from about 1945.
