Description

In the 1940s and early 1950s, polio—also called "infantile paralysis"—was epidemic in Dallas and the rest of the United States. The disease paralyzed muscles, including those controlling breathing. Some patients required a mechanical ventilator, or "iron lung". This photo was digitized from the 1951 Parkland School of Nursing yearbook (titled "The White Cap").
