Description

In 1918, an influenza epidemic swept the world. Soldiers were particularly susceptible because they lived in close quarters. So many soldiers became ill at Fort Dick (located on land that is now Dallas' Fair Park) that some were transferred to St. Paul Sanitarium for care. With all the hospital beds full, 45 military tents were set up on the grounds to accommodate them. In this photo, a soldier is on patrol with a rifle outside the tents.
