Description

This drawing of the Medical Arts Building, which opened in 1923, appeared on the cover of the March 1926 issue of the "Dallas Medical Journal". For many years, this building was the hub of Dallas medical office practice. The Dallas County Medical Society (DCMS) set up an office in the building in 1946. At that time, there were about 800 members of the DCMS, of whom about 600 had offices in the Medical Arts Building. The building was built by the Cary-Schneider Investment Company, which was headed by Edward H. Cary, M.D., the man who was the driving force behind the founding of Southwestern Medical College, the forerunner of Southwestern Medical School. The building -- located at the corner of St. Paul and Pacific Streets in downtown -- was demolished in 1977.
