Description
In this photo, 1941 graduates of the Parkland School of Nursing who have volunteered for the Army Nursing Service stand in a 'V' (for 'Victory') formation and salute the camera, with an American flag in the middle. Some nursing students had their education paid for by the military in exchange for service once they graduated. During World War II and for some years after, there was a strong military influence at Parkland Hospital (then located on Maple Avenue). Many of the doctors and nurses had served in the military, and brought a military mindset to the hospital.
