In a landmark 1966 Southwestern Medical School study, five male college students were confined to bed for three weeks to determine the cardiovascular de-conditioning effects of inactivity on the human body. The experiment was intended to mimic the effects of long-term manned space flight. Endurance training followed the bed rest. The results were published as a supplement to the journal Circulation. In 1996, the five original participants were re-tested before and after exercise training, to update the study. Repeating their participation in the study were UT Southwestern faculty members Gunnar Blomqvist, M.D. and Jere Mitchell, M.D. A co-investigator in the 1996 study was Peter Snell, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Internal medicine. In this photo, a study participant gets instructions from a research associate before beginning a test to measure cardiovascular fitness. The results of the 1996 study were published in the September 18, 2001 issue of the journal Circulation.
