In a landmark 1966 Southwestern Medical School study, five male college students were confined to bed for three weeks to determine the cardiovascular de-conditioning effects of inactivity on the human body. The experiment was intended to mimic the effects of long-term manned space flight. Endurance training followed the bed rest. The results were published as a supplement to the Journal Circulation. In 1996, the five original participants were re-tested before and after exercise training, to update the study. Repeating their participation in the study were UT Southwestern faculty members Gunnar Blomqvist, M.D. and Jere Mitchell, M.D. A co-investigator in the 1996 study was Peter Snell, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine. The results of the 1996 study were published in the September 18, 2001 issue of the Journal Circulation.
