Dr. Cecil O. Patterson, a gastroenterologist, was one of the first clinical faculty members to teach at Southwestern Medical College when it was founded in 1943. Dr. Patterson pioneered new methods to prevent bleeding from varicose veins in the esophagus; these and many other techniques he developed are still widely used today. In 1991, the Berta M. and Dr. Cecil O. Patterson Chair in Gastroenterology was established at UT Southwestern to further gastroenterology research.
