Dr. James Gilliam was a Professor of Dermatology and Internal Medicine. From 1979 to 1984, he was also Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Gilliam was head of the medical school's Immunodermatology Center. He was nationally recognized for his research on lupus erythematosus. In 1982, he was named the J. B. Shelmire Professor of Dermatology, a professorship established in memory of the first dermatologist in the state of Texas by Dr. Shelmire's children.
