Dr. Steven L. McKnight is a Professor of Biochemistry and holds the Distinguished Chair in Basic Biomedical Research and the Sam G. Winstead and F. Andrew Bell Distinguished Chair in Biochemistry.
He was appointed a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator in 1988.
His research focuses on transcription factors, the proteins that switch genes on and off.
He has been honored with memberships in the prestigious National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1992) and, in 2005, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
Dr. McKnight joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 1995 and became Chairman of Biochemistry one year later. As chairman from 1996 to 2016, he recruited chemists to the department to complement its biochemists and biophysicists.
