In the 1980s and 1990s, Gunnar Blomqvist, M.D., Ph.D., a Professor of Internal Medicine, headed a Space Medicine Laboratory at UT Southwestern. Dr. Andrew Gaffney would later go on to fly aboard Space Lab Life Sciences 1, the first National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) flight dedicated to human medical research. UT Southwestern's research project on the flight investigated the effects of weightlessness on the circulatory system.
