Dr. James Atkins was a cardiac specialist and a professor of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern. He was medical director of the paramedic system in Dallas County for 27 years before stepping down in 2002. He held numerous leadership positions in heart-related professional and governmental organizations and has received several awards from the American Heart Association. Dr. Atkins was a 1967 graduate of Southwestern Medical School and joined the medical school faculty in the early 1970s.
