Joseph L. Goldstein, M.D., is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Molecular Genetics at UT Southwestern. He shared the 1985 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Michael S. Brown M.D., for their discovery of the underlying mechanisms of cholesterol metabolism. Their findings led to the development of statin drugs, the cholesterol-lowering compounds that today are among the most widely-prescribed medications in the United States. Drs. Brown and Goldstein also shared the Lasker Award in Basic Medical Research (1985) and the National Medal of Science (1988) for their joint work. Dr. Goldstein was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1980 and to the Institute of Medicine in 1987. A member of the UT Southwestern faculty since 1972, he is a 1966 graduate of Southwestern Medical School. He is a Regental Professor and holds the Julie and Louis Beecherl Jr. Distinguished Chair in Biomedical Science and the Paul J. Thomas Chair in Medicine.
