Dr. Jay Buckey was on the UT Southwestern faculty from 1986 to 1995 and flew as a payload specialist on the space shuttle Columbia for the National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA) mission STS-90/Neurolab in April 1998. There he conducted experiments in Spacelab, the shuttle's scientific laboratory, dedicated to the study of the nervous system in space. At UT Southwestern, Dr. Buckey was a research associate in the Space Medicine Laboratory, headed by Dr. C. Gunnar Blomqvist. On the flight with Buckey was a NASA payload specialist with UT Southwestern connections, James A. (Jim) Pawelczyk, Ph.D., who was at UT Southwestern from 1989 to 1992 on a post-doctoral fellowship in cardiovascular neurophysiology.
