Johann Deisenhofer, Ph.D., is a professor emeritus at UT Southwestern who shared the 1988 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research using X-ray crystallography to elucidate for the first time the three-dimensional structure of a large membrane-bound protein molecule. This structure helped explain the process of photosynthesis, by which sunlight is converted to chemical energy, a process which has been described as the most important chemical reaction on earth. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1997. Dr. Deisenhofer is a 1974 graduate of the Technical University of Munich. He joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 1988. He held the endowed title of Regental Professor and the Virginia and Edward Linthicum Distinguished Chair in Biomolecular Science.
