Dr. Morris Ziff (1913-2005) was an expert in rheumatic diseases and joined the Southwestern Medical School faculty in 1958. His work led to the establishment of UT Southwestern's Rheumatic Disease Division of Internal Medicine which became one of the most outstanding in the nation. He served as the first Chair of the Rheumatic Disease Division as well as the first Director of the Harold C. Simmons Arthritis Research Center. He was named an Ashbel Smith Professor by the UT System Board of Regents in 1981, the highest faculty honor bestowed by the UT System. In 1982, the Morris Ziff Professorship in Rheumatology was named in his honor. He retired as Chair of the Rheumatic Disease Division in 1984, but continued an active clinical practice until 1999.
