Southwestern Medical College opened in 1943 in prefabricated plywood buildings, often called 'the shacks.' These buildings were located on Oak Lawn Avenue behind Parkland Hospital. In 1949, Southwestern Medical College became the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, of which Dr. Atticus J. Gill was Dean from 1954 to 1967.
