Title
Environmental chamber for hyperbaric oxygen therapy
UT Southwestern's Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine (IEEM) is one of the largest human physiology research programs in the country. The IEEM has a hyperbaric chamber and other equipment for conducting cardiovascular, respiratory, and neuromuscular research on how altitude, heat, and stress affect the body. The Hyperbaric Medicine Unit of IEEM's Environmental Physiology Laboratory contains the 40-foot-long, 9-foot-wide environmental chamber. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to treat chronic wounds, carbon monoxide poisoning, gas gangrene, and bone infections; it also reduces healing complications in irradiated tissues in cancer patients.
